Welcome to Sartovia, a thousand-year-old nation of complex contrasts, located on the planet Nuibie, in a galaxy parallel to our own, where humanity has an animal-like appearance. It’s in the heart of this tumultuous land that the story of “Nuibie College” unfolds.
Cassandra Kalabrio, an outspoken eleven-year-old, has left her peaceful village of Galite to attend secondary school of Nievicila, the prefecture of her province. An hour by train from her village, this big city is more than just a place of learning for Cassandra: it’s a new world, both dazzling and terrifying. In this secondary school, which also serves as a boarding school, Cassandra finds herself confronted with an environment where the ideals instilled by her uncle and the reality of Sartovia’s authoritarian regime collide. Deprived of her mother from an early age, and unaware of her father’s identity, she has lived under her uncle’s protection, far from the temptations of state propaganda.
But at Nievicila, surrounded by students and teachers steeped in the ideals of the single party, Cassandra soon feels lost. The tension between her family values and the pressures of Sartovia’s oppressive society force her to question her identity and loyalty. Her only refuge in this world of illusions is her faithful friend, Carelle Scandiberrie, a wild child whose complicity offers Cassandra a semblance of normalcy in a world distorted by vice.
As Cassandra begins her journey through secondary school, she finds herself faced with some heartbreaking choices. Will she remain faithful to her uncle’s teachings, despite the pressures of the prevailing indoctrination? Or will she succumb to the mirages of the society around her, abandoning her values in favor of conformity?
